 N - dimension

25/06 - 31/07/2010

Ludmila Bereznitska & Partner Gallery presents N-Dimension, the second project by the UBIK artist collective (Iaroslav Kolomiichuk, Maksym Nimenko, Denis Salivanov, Viktor Kharkevitch, Alina Yakubenko). This time around, the "ubiks" will turn the gallery into a laboratory to study the possibilities of spatial transformation. The experiment starts on June 25 and will last over a month. The artists have chosen as their goal to solve a non-existing artistic equation. In order to do this, they will study the phenomenon of perception trough a process of "reverse engineering". The project comprises five phases which correspond to different dimensions. Each phase follows its own agenda.

The development: from simple to complex and back.

We study perception itself. We analyse its structure, take it apart into its components and reverse-engineer it step-by-step.

The first dimension: the point

We turn the existing, physical space of the gallery into a virtual space by moving from the point towards the line.

The second dimension: the plane

We stay only in the plane studying the possibilities of flat solutions. Without leaving the second dimension, where objects have length and height, graphic lines create the illusion of a complex space.

The third dimension: space

Spatiality emerges. The objects don't just seem to exist, but are there for real. They come off the walls and to the fore. They are not just patterns of consciousness anymore. Their presence in the here and now is indisputable.

The fourth dimension: time

Four-dimensional space is easier to imagine than 2D reality. However, it is not as easily represented and captured. Therefore, any method designed to measure four-dimensional space is limited to a specific time frame. In this phase, space becomes dynamic. The main element is movement. Time makes itself known in video projections.

The fifth dimension: interaction and variation

In the fifth phase, our spatial work develops an element of individuality. The movement of the object is perceived in the usual, three-dimensional space, but with an endless number of development variations. Each artist works it independently as they see fit, adding to it something from themselves. Each of them tries to grasp space in their own way, but through interaction wholeness emerges. We are moving towards the point again.

The project contains many connotations.

It is about perception. We deconstruct perception and look at all its elements separately.

It is about a change in understanding space and time. Working with real, physical space, we distance ourselves from it. We transform objective realities into eventualities, and vice versa. We transform reality at will.

It is also about communication. The project's success depends on whether we will find a way to agree, to reach compromise and to put the satisfaction of our personal artistic ambitions last for the sake of the overall result. Art is a space free of prejudice and preconceived notion. Therefore, not the end product, i.e. the artwork, is the most important part, but the opportunity to experience something new, to widen one's horizon of understanding and to enter a space where one becomes immune to manipulation.

We create such a space inside the gallery and work with it. In doing so, we define our own set of rules and laws. We deliberately limit ourselves to just a few means of expression. We don't intend to create or record images. The only image emerging in the process of the work has to do with communication. However, it cannot be captured and given specific meaning. Even so, it is this image that initiates entirely new (liminal) experiences.

Our project is a laboratory, which means that the viewers can join the study in any phase. They can take part in the work process and suggest their own solutions to the problems pose. They can be both observers and active participants. The project is an open space.
